Lennon was imagining a world without religion, without material possessions without nations and even without heaven a global, humanistic society. It’s just that the music that accompanied them was so damn lovely. ![]() The funny thing is Lennon made no attempt to mask the song’s meaning, or mislead anyone the lyrics were clearly stated. What it really meant- Upon closer scrutiny, the world he was imagining offended many especially religious leaders. A really cool gesture was when George Michael (the Wham!-Careless Whisper guy) in 2000, paid over $2 million for the piano that Lennon wrote this on, and then returned it to the Beatles museum in Liverpool. We saw it as a universal “why can’t we all just get along” thing. It was universally praised and used for all sorts of events, serving as sort of a personal guide to accompany us through a troubled world. In general, the song had a hymn-like quality evoking spiritual, seemingly even religious, reverence. What we thought it meant- John Lennon’s peace anthem still moves people today, 45 years after its release. Songwriters love to be vague and disguise the true meaning of a song and, I admit, I love the challenge of trying to figure out what the hell they meant. It’s when the listener sees the words correctly, but totally does not get the song’s meaning, which could have been the artist’s intent anyway.
